DORÉ BLOGUlthera and Ultherapy PRIME: What Is the Difference?
Same Ultrasound Technology, What’s Different? Understanding How It Works, Its Effects, and How to Choose the Right Treatment
As we age, many people notice that their facial contours begin to look less defined, their jawline becomes less prominent, and their eyebrows or the area around their eyes start to sag.
One of the first non-surgical lifting options considered at this point is Ulthera, which uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).
With the introduction of Ultherapy PRIME, the next-generation system that builds on the original Ultherapy, more people are asking, “What has changed?” and “Is it really worth choosing Ultherapy PRIME?”
How are the two devices similar, and what sets them apart? What should you know about their results, pain levels, pricing, and how to verify authenticity? We have organized the answers around the questions we hear most often atDORÉ Clinic.
Q1. What’s the difference between Ultherapy and Ultherapy PRIME?
Ultherapy is a non-surgical lifting treatment that delivers high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy to the dermis and the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) without damaging the skin’s surface. This creates thermal coagulation points that stimulate collagen remodeling during the healing process.
Another key advantage is its DeepSEE technology, which provides real-time ultrasound imaging of the tissue beneath the skin during treatment using micro-focused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V).
The original Ultherapy system was approved in South Korea in 2009. Approximately 16 years later, the same manufacturer, Merz Aesthetics, introduced Ultherapy PRIME, its next-generation platform, which launched in South Korea in 2025.
In other words, Ultherapy PRIME is an upgraded platform within the same technology family as the original Ultherapy system.
Ultherapy PRIME™ is a medical device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and approved by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
Q2. Who might consider Ultherapy PRIME at DORE Clinic?
Ultherapy PRIME may be worth considering if you have started to notice a loss of skin elasticity or would like to achieve more defined facial contours.
For example, you may wish to consult with a medical professional if any of the following concerns apply to you.
You have ever looked in the mirror and gently lifted your jawline or eyebrows with your hands to see how your appearance might change.
You would like to improve your facial contours without surgery or injectable treatments.
You have been told that your skin is relatively thick or that you have a thicker layer of subcutaneous fat, and that treatment targeting deeper tissue layers may be appropriate.
You have been hesitant to try Ultherapy because of concerns about pain.
You need to return to your daily activities immediately after treatment.
However, facial sagging can have different underlying causes. A face that appears heavier due to excess fat may require a different approach from one affected by reduced skin elasticity.
For people with thin skin or limited facial fat, treatment planning should take both facial volume and skin thickness into account, rather than automatically opting for higher energy levels or deeper treatment.
Suitability should be assessed based on both your current skin condition and your desired results, rather than age or the type of concern alone.
Q3. What Has Been Upgraded in Ultherapy PRIME?
The upgrades in Ultherapy PRIME can be summarized in four key areas.
First, enhanced ultrasound visualization. While the original Ultherapy system is described as providing visualization of skin layers to a depth of approximately 4.5 mm, Ultherapy PRIME is reported to offer visualization at depths of up to 8 mm.
Second, an improved imaging experience. The ultrasound imaging field and display have been expanded, and noise-reduction technology has been incorporated, making it easier to visualize and assess the underlying tissue layers.
Third, improved treatment speed. Treatment is approximately 20% faster than with the previous system, with improved processing speed between shots. This difference may be particularly noticeable during treatments involving a high number of shots, such as full-face lifting.
Fourth, more consistent energy delivery. Another key upgrade is the system’s enhanced ability to deliver energy consistently and uniformly at the intended treatment depth.
Q4. How Do the Results and Duration of Effects Differ?
With the original Ultherapy system, results typically develop gradually, with changes becoming noticeable around 2–3 months after treatment and continuing to evolve over the following months.
With Ultherapy PRIME, its refined energy delivery and faster treatment process may offer an improved treatment experience. However, the timing and extent of visible results can vary from person to person, and earlier results should not be guaranteed.
The duration of results and recommended treatment intervals also vary between individuals. When an adequate number of shots is used, treatments are often spaced approximately one year apart. However, the appropriate interval depends on factors such as your skin condition, treatment area, and individual treatment plan.
We recommend consulting with the medical team at DORÉ Clinic to determine the most suitable approach based on your skin thickness, the underlying causes of sagging, and your treatment goals.
Q7. How can I verify authenticity? What makes Ultherapy PRIME at DORE Clinic different?
Before treatment, we recommend confirming that the device and transducer (treatment tip) are genuine and appropriately certified. You should also verify that the planned number of shots and treatment areas match the agreed treatment plan.
The authenticity of the device and treatment tips is an important factor to consider when it comes to treatment safety and quality.
At DORÉ Clinic, we use genuine Ultherapy PRIME equipment and are an Ultherapy-certified clinic.
At DORÉ Clinic, we use ultrasound imaging during Ultherapy PRIME treatment to assess the skin layers and fat distribution before tailoring the treatment depth and number of shots to each patient’s facial contours and the underlying causes of sagging.
For patients concerned about hollowing in the cheeks, we take a conservative approach to treatment depth and coverage, prioritizing careful monitoring of tissue responses and adjusting energy settings as appropriate during the procedure.
The goal of Ultherapy PRIME at DORÉ Clinic is not simply to deliver high levels of energy.
Rather, we aim to deliver energy to the appropriate tissue layers at suitable levels, while minimizing unnecessary discomfort and stress on the skin. Our goal is to help patients achieve their desired facial contour improvements while making the treatment experience as comfortable as possible.
If you are considering Ultherapy PRIME, look beyond the device name alone. Start by understanding what treatment depth and number of shots may be appropriate for your individual skin condition and concerns.
